Boys Belong in the Woods

No doubt about it, boys belong in the woods.

This was a quick trip to Baker Lake with the intended destination beyond maple grove camp on the east side of the lake about 5 miles from the trailhead.

We start out with the obligatory trip the Ripoff Everyone Incorporated (REI) for all the appropriate accoutrements. Last summer we had everyone using packs that were not the wrong size and Dad ended up carrying a 70 lb pack. This year Dad got smart and spent a lot of money to avoid carrying so much stuff (so much for pioneer resourcefulness)

Actually, Alex woke up early on Friday and told us that the zipper on his pack was broken which meant no pack for him. As it is impossible to outfit only one of the three amigos, Rippoff Everyone Incorporated Bellingham store posted record sales for the weekend.

We made it to mile 4 and the boys were pretty much done. I gave them the choice of heading on to Maple grove camp (another mile) or going back to Anderson camp (also another mile) Clearly it is faster and easier to back the forwards so we spent the night at Anderson camp. Anderson camp is a nice spot on the lake with good views of Mt. Baker and Mt. Shuksan.

The reservoir/lake was really high so there wasn't much of a shore line but the boys had fun throwing rocks in the lake, roasting marshmallows, sharpening every stick in site, using the hatchet to speed the decomposition of every rotting stump in camp and otherwise being boys.

The next morning we packed up and headed out. I told the boys to go fast and beat the troop of boy scouts, who had also spent the night and left camp shortly before us, back to the car. I am sure that the kayaker from Bellingham who spent the night in the same camp was wondering what he had done wrong to deserve such karma as to camp with both the boy scouts and the Johnston boys.

In any case da Boyz hustled it up and beat them to the car.

A quick stop at the Burger King for large milkshakes and the home to the girls made for a great weekend.
